Renting in Denmark, in English

Many homes on Mursten are furnished flats and houses for people moving to Denmark for work or study. The site and the apps (iPhone and Android) both work in English, while the listing texts are written by the landlords themselves, so some are only in Danish. A few rules are worth knowing before you sign anything.

  • A landlord can ask for a deposit of at most three months’ rent and at most three months’ rent paid in advance, on top of the first month’s rent. Those limits are set by the Danish Rent Act (lejeloven).
  • Ask for a written lease. Most landlords use the standard Danish contract, and anything unusual is listed under its special terms.
  • Never transfer money for a home you have not seen, and never share your MitID, passport scan or bank details with someone you have only met online.
  • If a landlord wants to move the conversation off Mursten straight away, or asks you to pay through a “booking service”, report the listing.

This is general information, not legal advice. Our more detailed guides are in Danish: Mursten guides.

The app

The whole market on the map

On your phone you see the homes on the map, save the ones you like, and hear about new ones that match your search. You message the landlord in the app and book a viewing in the same place.

The app is free for iPhone (iOS 18 or later) and Android. On desktop you use mursten.app in the browser — the search is the same.

Mursten on computer and iPhone: the website and the app show available rental homes with photos, search and a list.
